New Year, New You!

It’s time to start thinking about the new year, which means that it’s time to start thinking of some New Year’s resolutions!

What is a resolution?

A resolution is a promise you make to yourself at the beginning of a new year to continue good behavior, change something about yourself or your lifestyle, or accomplish a goal. A New Year’s resolution could be to continue helping your community, to stop eating as many sweets, or to learn a new language! A gymnastics resolution might be to finally learn that new skill you've been working on, improve a skill that you've been struggling with, or score a new personal best at a meet this coming season.

How do you make a resolution?

Making a New Year’s resolution is super easy! First, think about the things you did the previous year as well as the things that you’d like to do in the future. These can be positive and negative things - for instance, you might think back to how many skills you mastered this last year, but you might also remember any new mental blocks that developed this year. Make a list on paper of the things you’d like to see continue, the things you’d like to do better or stop doing, and the new things that you’d like to see happen in the upcoming year. Writing it down on a piece of paper helps you remember all of your observations from the last year, and having that list to look back at throughout the next year will help keep you on track to achieve your resolution. Be as specific as you can – it’s much easier to keep a goal when you know exactly where you want to be when you finally reach it. Don't just write "I want to score high at all my meets this season." Instead, try this: "I want to score a 9.5 or higher on bars at one of my meets by the end of the season." When you set a very specific goal, it's easier to make a plan to work towards that goal as well as know when you've reached it.

How do you keep a New Year’s resolution?

Keeping a New Year’s Resolution is certainly harder than coming up with one, but there are things that you can do to help yourself out! First, make your resolution realistic. That way, you are more likely to reach your goals. It's important to set high-achieving goals for yourself, but if your goal is too high, it may be impossible to achieve in the timeline you set for yourself. You don't want to be discouraged by an impossible goal! Write down your resolution and place it where you can see it. You can simply write it down on a note and keep it in your locker at the gym, or you can get creative and make a goal board to visualize where you want to be once you achieve your goals. Also, tell your friends and family about your resolution so that they can help keep you accountable and on track. They can also help you celebrate once you reach your goal! Make sure to track your progress and award yourself for making improvements. Last but not least, don’t give up! Even if you aren’t reaching your goals in the beginning, or you stop a few months into the year, reevaluate and readjust your goals if you need to, then keep going!
