Let's Get That Hair Competition Ready

Written by Maria Jackson

You’ve put in the hours of practice and you’re feeling confident in your skills and routines. You have put on your sparkly competition leotard and you are getting ready to show off your gymnastics. But what about your hair??

You don’t have to always do a boring ponytail or bun. With just a few easy steps, you can turn a simple hairstyle into something fun and expressive for your next competition.

Here are 6 cool hairstyles to try for your next gymnastics meet:

1. Braids and braided ponytails.

There are plenty of variations on traditional braids and ponytails that you can try.

You can add simple twists or braids to your hair before pulling it into a ponytail or you can try out a variety of braiding styles like the fishtail or a classic French braid.

There are lots of online tutorials to give you ideas and help you perfect your style.

2. Bow bun.

The bow bun is a cute twist on the traditional bun.

You can view a tutorial on how to do a bow bun on YouTube.

3. Sock bun.

To make a sock bun all you will need is a clean sock, scissors, a ponytail holder, and some hairpins.

Start by cutting the toe off of a sock and roll the sock down until it forms a donut-like shape.

Next, put your hair in a ponytail and then slip the sock donut onto your ponytail.

Roll the sock down your ponytail, tucking your hair inside as you go, until a bun is formed.

Be sure to pin and hairspray your beautiful bun into place.

4. Upside-down French braid bun.

Flip your head upside-down and do a French braid starting from the bottom of your hair until you get about two-thirds of the way up your head.

Then, fasten the braid with a ponytail holder.

Flip your head back over and take the remainder of your hair and make a high ponytail on top of your head.

Follow the steps above for the sock bun to finish off this look.

5. Colored streaks in your hair.

If you’re allowed, you can put some colored streaks in your hair to mix things up. There are lots of wash out products available that easily let you try out some temporary streaks.

You could even try using your team colors or colors that match your favorite leotard.

6. Scrunchies.

Scrunchies are an easy and fun way to add some flare to your hairstyle.

You can wrap them around your ponytail or bun and coordinate them with your competition leotards.

No matter what hairstyle you do for your next gymnastics competition, it is important to remember to make it tight and secure. Your hair needs to be able to stay up during all of your tumbling, so be sure your style will hold!
